molly_may: (stranger things)
This is the time of year when I would normally do a "what's new this fall on TV" kind of post, but, to be honest, this year there's not a single new show that has me excited. I would be interested in the new Star Trek series if it weren't going to air on the CBS streaming network, but I'm not paying for another streaming service right now. I'm sure I'll be watching The Mayor, which sounds as though it fits right into my sitcom wheelhouse. Beyond that, there's nothing that interests me very much.

The three returning shows that I'm most looking forward to are The Good Place (which is already back), Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Stranger Things. I like all of these shows A LOT, but I wouldn't consider myself fannish about any of them. I kind of miss being fannish about something.

Where Freedom Rings...

It's been interesting to watch the brouhaha about the NFL controversy. The saddest thing is that this is just another example of Trump's attempts at misdirection. He could care less what the players are doing on the field. He sure as heck doesn't care about them as human beings. If he did he wouldn't whine that they're not playing rough enough since the newest safety measures were put in place to try and keep them from incurring such severe brain damage from the hits they take during the games.

My father fought in World War II, my brother fought, and died, in Vietnam, to earn, and continue to support, every US citizen's right to peacefully protest. Whether you agree with them or not, they have the right to protest what they perceive as a racial injustice. It's part of the freedom we enjoy living in this country.

Title: As Luck Would Have It

Author:

[personal profile] littleotter73

Character: Giles

Rating: FRC

Setting: Pre-Series

Prompt: Velvet Underground - Head Held High

Word Count: 100

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss’ sandbox

He sat in the chair, hands cuffed, staring at his boots, scuffed and covered in demon ichor - all that was left of Randall after the failed exorcism - facing a murder charge. The police had raided the abandoned building just in time to witness him beheading an Eyghon possessed Randall. The rest had scattered, but weakened by magicks, he’d been caught.

“Let him go. His story checks out. An 8mm film camera was found on the scene, but no body. Just film students having a lark.”

Ripper Giles walked out of the station, but not exactly with his head held high.

Today we had our third bath, and this time it went well!

I feel unreasonably proud of this. Kitten bathing: achievement unlocked!

- choose both pictures and try to bring them together in one story

Interpret the pictures in which way ever you like. As long as you can explain the connection between the picture and your work everything is fine.

You can replace the guy from image #25 with every character (male or female) you want

Remix Revival authors have been revealed, at least for the main collection, so I can now post a link to my story!

To Paint a Symphony (Arrangement for Solo Piano) (1527 words) by Isis
Fandom: The Watchmaker of Filigree Street - Natasha Pulley
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Keita Mori/Thaniel Steepleton
Characters: Keita Mori, Thaniel Steepleton
Additional Tags: Synesthesia, Music, Established Relationship, Precognition, Remix
Summary: Possible futures, with musical accompaniment.
Remix of: to paint a symphony by [archiveofourown.org profile] Arzani

I actually matched on Black Sails, but none of [archiveofourown.org profile] Arzani's fics in that fandom gave me much of an idea, partly because I'm not a Flint/Silver shipper. But The Watchmaker of Filigree Street is such an interesting canon - I've written a couple of stories for it already - and when I read "to paint a symphony" I immediately wanted to tease out the thread in which Keita plays the different compositions Thaniel might make in the future based on what choices he makes about Grace, and Thaniel sees them in different colors, and write my version of that story. (If you haven't read the book, this won't make much sense. But it's been nominated for Yuletide again this year, if you're thinking about reading it. It has a m/m relationship and a mechanical octopus.)

1) So as I mentioned in an earlier post, I re-read my dissertation. By coincidence it was almost exactly 8 years since I'd last looked at it. Although I'd been advised to publish it, I couldn't face the process after its already long journey. It would have meant going through further drastic revisions given that books on internet culture were gaining interest and it would have to be redone for a popular audience. Read more... )

2) This Stephen Colbert tweet and particularly the discussion following it was plenty funny. But it made me think about an issue I hadn't considered before. Do movies made elsewhere ever try to make up countries in North America? Read more... )

3) Boy does the Internet look weird when you're used to browsing without scripts and suddenly ADS! Clashing backgrounds! Video inserts! It's like being deaf and suddenly being blasted with sound. Yuck. (Makes me glad I rarely have the speakers on too...)

4) If only we had more of this kind of guy, who spends his time investigating corporate wrongdoing. "I can’t believe a year and a half after the financial crisis, no one is doing this stuff. I’m not talking about writing these massive, 10,000-word thumbsuckers about some crappy company that did something to a politically vulnerable population. I’m talking about companies that wake up every day and, using the imprimatur of the law, do things that are unconscionable and appalling."

5) Because of a cold snap at the start of September we brought in our hibiscus from the balcony -- the earliest we've had to do so.

Gratitudes

Sep. 24th, 2017 01:58 pm[personal profile] kass
kass: apples and honey (apples)
1. Although it is after the autumn equinox in my hemisphere, it is unseasonably warm right now, so I am grateful for air conditioning, even if I feel ridiculous using it on September 24!

2. Apple-picking with Mr. Kid today! This is one of our fall traditions and it is so sweet. The orchard is near our old house. Rows and rows of beautiful apple trees stretching toward fields and hills. And we got two bags of honeycrisps, my favorite apples of them all.

3. Related to the above, there is a granola-topped apple crisp cooling now on my counter. I'm also making a chicken curry in the slow cooker to eat all week, and I've cooked up some ground turkey and vegetables with soy and sesame and cilantro and will add rice noodles to them later for dinner tonight.

4. Dishwasher (now running) and washing machine (also now running.) The fact that we have these appliances; the fact that we have power with which to run them.

5. Watching Mr. Kid gleefully play with Mr. Kitten, who has a catnip mouse and is carrying it proudly around the room in his mouth. I can't tell whether the catnip is making the kitten goofier, or whether this is just his natural three-month-old goofitude, but either way, it's adorbs.

I always wanted to give the franchise as much depth and weight as possible. One of the easiest ways to do that is to politicise it. -- James Roberts

Long before Cheryl and Jason Blossom were the victim and victimizer within a taboo relationship in Afterlife with Archie, or respectively mentally disturbed and dead in the Riverdale TV series, they were more lighthearted elitist troublemakers in the old Archie Comics continuity. That doesn't mean what they got up to wasn't envelope-pushing in its own way for the relatively family-friendly venue. Especially in this, their first appearance.
