Chance Encounters (AO3 link) by [profile] luckweaver.

Summary: The first step in the plan was to lie low for a little, and stay out of sight. Of course, trouble had a way of finding Roda...

Notes: This is a series of short stories, probably 3 chapters for each, with minor details about what Roda gets up to immediately following the events of 'The Death and Life of Rodageitmososa'. These take place during Roda's 8th regeneration.

6 chapters posted. Some great guest stars. Go. Enjoy. :)

Still been a rough few weeks. Still dealing with health and financial issues plus a close friend, of more than thirty years, has just been diagnosed with Stage Four stomach cancer.

His tumor is rare and particularly nasty. Even with chemo it doesn't look good but he's a fighter. Heck, he had his first round of chemo yesterday and today he and his band, the Bowlers, are playing at the Ohio State Fair. As Danya put it, he may have to sit his 'Rocking Ass down for it but he'll be there". Mike is their lead guitarist.

Mike and Danya are two of the nicest people on this planet! Danya is a Vet, Mike is an incredible artist/musician. Each year at WonderFest he designs a Plaque to honor the show based on Lee's designs for the show that year. They are always beautiful and true works of art. As soon as I can I'm going to be taking pictures of any of the previous year's Plaques we still have to post to eBay so I can send anything we can make off them along via Mike's paypal account.

Before he got sick, Mike was feeding and caring for several feral cat colony's in Columbus. Besides their own menagerie of fur balls they've rescued and love at home. You wouldn't believe the cat runs, the cat sun room he's designed for them, they're amazing. Both of them truly live lives of service to others, be they human or tend to purr. A GoFundme has been set up to help them with the massive medical bills they're facing right now. Please, if you can, take a look, definitely share the link if you wouldn't mind:

As for me, still fighting to get over this latest flareup of my lupus. Plus, I'm still trying to sell whatever I can to help us pay bills and make ends meet. I'm getting stuff posted to Ebay to sell now that my vision has settled down a little from my flare. If you guys wouldn't mind sharing what I've posted I'd really appreciate it. Here's the link:

http://stores.ebay.com/Barbaras-Essentials

If you see anything you'd like, but would rather pay for it here, let me know and I can tell you what it'd be with postage. My Paypal is bstaton@iglou.com. If you do buy something, if you wouldn't mind, send payment for it via friends and family. That way they don't take out all the fees.

Any help passing this along would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to keep adding stuff to sell as I can get pictures taken. If you guys wouldn't mind sharing what I've posted I'd really appreciate it. Here's the link:

Help me turn away from the awful?

Ugh, y'all, I am having one of those days where just keeping my eyes open and witnessing the awfulness of my nation's government is making me feel bleak and wrung-out and helpless. And I keep opening FB and Twitter in adjacent tabs, and then after reading for a while realizing that reading them is not actually helping anyone or anything (me included) and closing them, and then a few minutes later opening them again without even thinking about it, which says something about my social media habits that I do not like. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

I miss having a sense of active involvement in fandom. I have a few hours ahead of me with no kid to mind, and I obviously need to stop poking at social media (it's the emotional-intellectual equivalent of just eating endless bags of potato chips -- hours go by and then I feel sick to my stomach), and I know that once upon a time I would have seized on this time as an opportunity to make something for y'all, and I miss that. But I'm not embedded in any particular universes right now, and I feel tapped-out and devoid of ideas.

Read any good books lately, especially fiction or nonfiction that left you feeling lifted-up instead of dragged-down?

For those of you who are actively fannish, what are the things that are bringing you joy?

The Thorn (poem)

Prompt here

The thorn is sharp

‘Neath gleaming blossom

Bright in the lamp

Of Springtime’s sun

The guard before the

Gate to pleasure

Its prick as fierce

As edge of sword

The words that bite

The eyes that cut

All you see

Is love beneath

But should you want

My heart as yours

Respect the thorn

With which I greet

What I'm Reading Wednesday

Jul. 26th, 2017 04:42 pm[personal profile] angrboda
angrboda: A pile of opened books (Books)
It's been ages since I've done this. Again.

Still slowly but surely making my way through The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. I've taken to listening while ironing instead of watching Netflix, so I can get a chapter or two in that way. About 75% of the way through now.

Also still reading The Scarab Path, but I'm quite close to the end. After that, this series will no longer be re-read, because this is as far as I ever got. I do remember the stuff that's going on in the book right now, but I'm quite pleased to not being able to remember what the big mystery was or even if an answer was given yet. I've got a suspicion, but on the other hand rather doubt it can be that simple. Also, more than ever I want to firmly whack a specific character over the head with a shovel. I remember growing to disliking that character over the course of this book the first time around, and it has happened all over again. Very much hope they will get over it. Soon. Soon would be good.

Finally, I've found myself suddenly picking up the first book of the Belgariad series by David Eddings and proceeding to chew through three more and half of a fourth. So actually nearly finished with the series. Again x many. Intend to power straight through the Mallorean series as well afterwards. Familarity = good de-stressor.

Wednesday Reading

I did a fair amount of reading over the weekend, and early this week.

Court of Fives by Kate Elliott was too nerve-wracking and painful for me to read right now; I finished it, but the sequels will definitely have to wait. The race and class issues were very well-depicted, I thought, and the suspense was excellent. I am just too stressed about the world to handle this sort of thing in fiction right now.

The Furthest Station by Ben Aaronovitch was, alas, much shorter than I had hoped. Abigail was so great! I want all the Abigail stories!!!

I was happily surprised that Apprentice in Death by J.D. Robb, 43rd in the series, was much better than several of the previous volumes. There were a lot of twists and barriers to solving the mystery, capturing the perpetrators, and bringing them to justice, and remarkably little checking in with the huge recurring cast, which can become tedious. I read this partly because mysteries are comforting (justice wins!) and partly for purposes of analysis. I need to write down notes on its structure and character types and things like that.

would a cushion help

Ouch! Someone at work decided they wanted a more comfortable chair and so switched mine with another. On top of residual accident injuries, this is leaving my legs and knees feeling quite sore. I'm thinking I need a chair cushion. Do you think that'd make a difference? If yes, any recommendations on brands?
